Get some Altitude!

If we are going to solve the problems we are facing today in our world, we are going to need to get some altitude - meaning a higher, wider, deeper perspective.

Contrary to what many people believe, we are evolving. Not only individually but collectively. Not only externally but internally in consciousness and culture.

Most notably on our journey upward is how our values change.  As our consciousness develops and expands, our thinking develops, our hearts open and we begin to care more - about others, ourselves, the planet and all its lifeforms.  When we first open to higher more caring and inclusive values, pretty soon all that is out of alignment with them comes zooming to the foreground of our awareness like a 3-D movie.   Suffering, greed, selfishness, and un-caring are seen much more clearly now.

This new worldview can at first bring about a surge of “save the world” motivation and action, which is awesome and admirable, but often results in frustration, disappointment, helplessness, powerlessness, and most notably pessimism and cynicism. This seems to be a normal stage in our growth process, at least for many of us, as we transition into seeing a deeper truth.

The problem is that many people stop here. They think this is it. They believe they see clearly now that the world is getting worse. And the truth is that they are seeing more clearly - more clearly than they did - but not clearly enough to be able to disern the patterns of evolution and transformation - meaning how we evolve, in what direction, and in what dimensions. Until we see from this altitude, we understandably won’t see over the mountain top and are not going to be effective enough in implementing the solutions needed for our current world conditions.

Information on the patterns of growth and development is coming forward abundantly through internal and external research as more people awaken to this level of consciousness. If we can get through our self-righteous position that it is all going to crash and there is nothing we can do about it, then we should read this leading edge information. We should open our minds to other possibilities. We should look deeper and see that our “realism” is just a defense and a story. If we are truly interested in making this world a better place, which deep down we all are, we really should.

Secondly, our save the world, well intentioned action to make this world a more caring, empathic, loving, compassionate, sharing world, is not going to work until we have a good honest look at ourselves first.  This doesn’t mean we are defective, lacking, or need to be fixed or changed. Healing actually starts with the opposite - to accept ourselves where we are and know that we are whole already. This is always where healing begins.

Healing work also means releasing and forgiving judgments we have been holding about ourselves and others. Not releasing discerning judgments which are positive, necessary, and good, but negative reactive judgments that spew out negative energy, create boundaries, and do nothing but perpetuate the very issues and problems we are ‘against’. The fundamentals of why we judge and how to heal and transform this energy is in my book, Inward & Upward

For one thing, there are no judgments in Oneness. Judgments exclude and create boundaries that engender conflict, fear, anger, shame, and suffering - everything we are seeking to transcend. This is why the inner work comes first. Healing all the judgments that separate us, that exclude others from our care, forgiveness, and empathy.

We must update all of the old beliefs we once held that may still be operating in our lives.

We must practice new behaviors from this new worldview, learning to be with ourselves in a new way and to interact with others and our enviroment in a more loving, conscious manner.

We must also take action in the world externally. But now, with our new map and a wider and wiser heart, we can take more effective action. We see the patterns of development more clearly, we can accept and communicate with all people of all values without the hidden agenda of trying to change them. We accept them where they are and at the same time we work to faciliate the conditions that will allow people to develop and grow in the most healthy way possible. “We grow up by reaching down”, philospher Steve McIntosh says.

Each stage of consciousness has important lessons it must learn, like a school. How can we facilitate and create those learning conditions? We will only be open to these ideas and information if we see the bigger picture. This is the work. Inner and outer. Let’s get it done - together!
